Welcome to Tanzania:
The land of the Africa's highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro; Africa's biggest lake, Lake Victoria; Africa's longest and the world's second deepest lake, Lake Tanganyika; and the world's biggest concentration of wild animals and most spectacular mammal migration in the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater.
WHY I NEED VOLUNTEERS:
I'm a founder of a registered organization, based in Mwanza, Tanzania dealing with awareness
creation to the youths on the challenges that face the youngsters and
the environment at large through volunteering to teach in schools
(kindergarten, primary & secondary) and colleges. Our main concerns
are education, health and environment.
WHAT VOLUNTEERS DO?
We work with local centers that keep orphans whose parents either died
with HIV/AIDS or kids that were dumped / abandoned. With these centers,
volunteers will have a chance to teach English, counting/maths, various
sports and songs and help to determine and stimulate the kids’ talents
and instruct them accordingly with love and care.
With the organization team, volunteers will be teaching in various
public or private schools and colleges and help in various environmental and youths
projects in Mwanza city and Sengerema district.
Teaching Programs:
- Teaching in Nursery schools (working with kids); teaching them to count, reading, songs and different sports.
- Teaching in Primary School; Most of primary schools contain kids aged 5years to 13. Volunteers will be helping to teach
either English, mathematics, science, geography or other foreign
language i.e, French to some other institutions.
- Teaching in Secondary Schools; Most of secondary school students are
aged from 14 to 22. In Tanzania, the secondary system is divided into
two thus; Ordinary level and Advanced level (High Schools). Here,
volunteers will have to teach Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Civics,
Geography, History, English and other foreign languages such as Spanish
and French to some institutions.
ABOUT ACCOMMODATION.
We have two types of accommodations, volunteer/s can opt
whether to live with the host family(50USD per week, food included) or in hostels or lodge(from 7 USD per day-food excluded). We recommend host families b'se they
will help you learn lots from our communities.
WHAT VOLUNTEERS GAIN/BENEFIT!
-Mwanza is the only city which is near to Serengeti National Park..only
2hrs drive from the city center. We are also close to a Sukuma tribe Museum and amazing islands
like Saanane, Ukerewe and Rubondo Island where you can experience the
real African Nature. We can also help you arrange safari to Serengeti
National Park, the great Kilimanjaro and the Ngorongoro creator if you
will be interested to.
-Through interaction with the local people, volunteers can learn
Tanzanian ways of life, traditions, language and African dishes.
TOURIST VISA:
Most visitors require visas with the
exception of certain countries of the Commonwealth. Zanzibar remains
independent, although it is a part of the union of Tanzania: British, Canadian and South African nationals require visas for Tanzania. It is advisable to obtain a visa in
advance of travel as certain airlines insist on them prior to departure.
Depending on nationality and country of origin, a visa may be obtained
on arrival at Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro airports. If you will be flying in from Kenya you can get your visa at Mwanza airport, and at Namanga
Gate on the Tanzania/Kenya border if you come in by bus.
Visas cost US$50–100 depending on nationality and are usually valid for three months.
C.T.A-Conducting Temporary Assignment (For Volunteers)
One thing, here in Tanzania..volunteers counted as workers, and so they are obliged to pay for the C.T.A
(Conducting Temporary Assignment) which is the volunteering/working
permit that it costs US$200 and works for 3months. Mind you-that is out of the tourist visa, and without the C.T.A you will
be counted as a tourist and so, you will be lacking some
qualifications to work or volunteer in Tanzania. But, i can still have
you with me as a tourist.
CLOTHING:
Generally, casual comfortable clothing that can be is suitable for working environment.
-Light cotton tops and cotton trousers,
-Long-sleeved blouses/shirts
-Comfortable, walking shoes.
HEALTH:
In Tanzania, yellow fever is no
longer a problem..but if you have a plan to visit some other countries
in Africa, you must produce a valid yellow fever certificate obtained no
less than ten days prior to travel.
You will have to get malaria
prophylactics before entering Tanzania. When purchasing these, tell your
doctor or pharmacist that you intend visiting Tanzania. Precautionary
measures to take to prevent contact with mosquitoes include:
insect repellent, cover up at sundown, sleep under a mosquito net and
wear long-sleeved clothing and long trousers in the evenings.
Immunisation against cholera, polio,
hepatitis A & B, typhoid and tetanus is recommended if travelling
by road. It is advisable to obtain medical insurance prior to travel.
Emergency services and first aid is difficult to obtain outside major
cities and tourist areas, so bring with you any medication which you may
require.
CURRENCY AND CREDIT CARDS :
-The unit of currency is the Tanzanian shilling (Tsh). There is no limit on the amount of foreign currency that can be imported.
-Visa and MasterCard are accepted by
most of Banks, forex, top hotels and lodges around the country.
LANGUAGE:
The official language is Swahili (Kiswahili), which is generally spoken, and various local languages abound.
Swahili is the language the public primary
schools teach in. English is the second official language and the
country’s commercial language as well as the main teaching language for
all the scientific subjects in primary private and secondary schools. We also have tribes depending on the zones, out here people also speak Sukuma language.
